Country of Rio Marina
Rio Marina, from the Latin Rio-river that flows down to the sea, is located on the Costa che Brilla, on the north-eastern side of the island of Elba.
It was born as a village of fishermen and miners, in fact the mines and the port were used for the excavation and transport of iron ore, for this reason it is the Iron Capital of the Island of Elba. Even today the minerals with their sparkle and the classic reddish color, characterize the village and the coast, from the facades of the houses, to the black sand beaches, to the colored cliffs, including the same seabeds that sparkle under the water. After the closure of the mines, the mining activity gave way to tourism development, transforming Rio Marina into a thriving seaside resort and the buildings that once belonged to the mines into museum structures and open-air industrial archaeology.
Beaches on the Coast that Shines
On foot: A few steps from the Hotel you can reach the Spiaggia della Torre and the Spiaggia del Sasso.
Along the Sentiero dell’Amore walk you can go down to the sea and visit the three pristine coves: Marina di Gennaro, Luisi D’Angelo, Il Porticciolo.
Sport & Fitness
Rio Marina is a fundamental stage of the GTE, Grande Traversata Elbana, the main itinerary that crosses the entire ridge of the Island of Elba, from Cavo to Pomonte: it is the most significant route both in terms of duration, consisting of 3 stages, and for the variety of panoramas.
Rio Marina Mining Museum
Inside the building that once housed the Mining Directorate, the Museum of Elba Minerals, Mining Art and the historical archive of the mines are currently housed. The original environments of the mine are recreated in the museum rooms and an important collection of samples of minerals and stones from the Island of Elba is preserved.
Assapora
Inside the breakfast room you will find the products of ‘Assapora’, a line of artisanal products by Chef Felice Sapio, on display for sale. The ‘Assapora’ artisanal laboratory is located at the Hotel Rio sul Mare.
